Cinema Survey

Musique - Hooray for Hollywood from Hollywood Hotel

Amanda from A Noodle in a Haystack came up with the following survey, which was lots of fun to fill out!

1. What is your favorite movie starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, excluding all of The Thin Man films?

Libeled Lady!  Who can resist a movie with that cast??

2. Name a screen team that appeared in only one film together but are still noteworthy for how well they complimented each other.

Norma Shearer & Joan Crawford in The Women.  Technically, this isn't their only movie together since Joan was Norma's stand-in in Lady of the Night, but I don't think that counts as being a "screen team".  I would have loved to see them play friends in a movie like Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins had to in Old Acquaintance.

3. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers' best film together?

Flying Down to Rio

4. Your favorite actor named "Robert"?

Robert Montgomery

5. An actor/actress who, when you see one of their movies, you always wish that someone else was in his/her role?

I honestly can't think of anyone who fits that criteria.  However, I would have loved to see someone else play Mary Kelly in From Hell (no offense to Heather Graham, but she just wasn't a great match for Johnny Depp or this part).

6. An actor/actress that someone close to you really loves that you can't stand or vice versa?

Not that I can think of.  My friends and family generally either like the same actors I do or they've never heard of the actors I like.

7. An actor/actress that you both agree on completely?

N/A

8. Complete this sentence: Virginia O'Brien is to Ethel Merman as...

You know, honestly, I've never seen a Virginia O'Brien movie or an Ethel Merman movie in my life!  But after a quick Google search, I found that Virginia O'Brien could imitate Ethel Merman really well, so my sentence would be "Virgina O'Brien is to Ethel Merman as Peter Bogdanovich is to Alfred Hitchcock" because man, that guy can imitate Hitch!

9. What is your favorite film starring Ray Milland?

Dial M For Murder, of course!  (Grace Kelly is my favoritest!)

10. You had to have seen this one coming: what is your favorite movie of the 1960s?

Viva Las Vegas
Or HELP!

11. An actor/actress that you would take out of one film and put into a different movie that was released the same year?

I'd take Clara Bow out of Hoop-La and put her in Dinner at Eight.  Hoop-La was her last movie and in my opinion, not that great.  I would have loved to see her end her career with an awesome movie like Dinner at Eight - although she might have outshone the rest of the all-star cast!

12. Who was your favorite of Robert Montgomery's leading ladies?

Norma Shearer!!

13. You think it would have been a disaster if what movie starred the actor/actress who was originally asked to star in it?

Gone With the Wind - if it had had anyone other than Vivien Leigh as Scarlett!  Not that the other actresses considered weren't talented - I just don't think that anyone could have been as perfect for the role as Vivien!

14. An actor/actress who you will watch in any or almost any movie?

Oh man, there is no way to narrow that down.  So I'll just say Grace Kelly, Clara Bow, Norma Shearer, and Jean Harlow.  Oh, and Gary Oldman!

15. Your favorite Leslie Howard film and role?

Gone With the Wind is my favorite Leslie Howard movie.  I'm not too sure on the role, though.  Ashley Wilkes is not my favorite character ever, although Leslie did an awesome job of it.  I'm going to have to say Romeo in Romeo & Juliet because that's probably one of the choicest roles for a man ever.  Plus, he got to act with Norma Shearer!

16. You have been asked to host a marathon of four Barbara Stanwyck films. Which ones do you choose?

This one is super, super hard.  I loves me some Barbara Stanwyck!!  I say Night Nurse, Baby Face, The Lady Eve, and Christmas in Connecticut.

17. What is, in your mind, the nearest to perfect comedy you have ever seen? Why?

I'm going to say Ghostbusters because it's funny when it's 1984 and you're 7 and it's funny when it's 2010 and you're 33.  It's also got action, romance, and an amazing cast.

18. You will brook no criticism of what film?

Do I have to narrow it down?  I don't like hearing any criticism of any films that I love.

19. Who is your favorite Irish actress?

Most definitely Grace Kelly!

20. Your favorite 1940s movie starring Ginger Rogers?

Roxie Hart, but mostly because it's based off of Maurine Dallas Watkins' play, Chicago.  I actually am not a huge fan of this movie, but I really haven't seen any other 40s Ginger movies as I prefer her in the 30s.

21. Do you enjoy silent movies?

Do I enjoy breathing?  Of course!

22. What is your favorite Bette Davis film?

Watcher in the Woods

23. Your favorite onscreen Hollywood couple?

No contest - Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell!!

24. This one is for the girls, but, of course, the guys are welcome to answer, too: who is your favorite Hollywood costume designer?

Adrian

25. To even things out a bit, here's something the boys will enjoy: what is your favorite tough action film?

Maybe not so tough, but I loved the action (and comedy) in Gunga Din.

26. You are currently gaining a greater appreciation for which actor(s)/actress(es)?

Tippi Hedren.  I've always loved The Birds, but I'd never seen Marnie until recently.  She's excellent!

27. Franchot Tone: yes or no?

Oh yes!!  Yummy!

28. Which actors and/or actresses do you think are underrated?

Norma Shearer, Joan Blondell, Barbara Stanwyck, Miriam Hopkins, Frederic March

29. Which actors and/or actresses do you think are overrated?

I can't think of anyone whose acting I don't like that is considered a superb actor, so no one, I guess.

30. Favorite actor?
Gary Oldman!

31. Favorite actress?

Grace Kelly!

32. Of those listed, who is the coolest: Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Steve McQueen, or Patrick Stewart?

I'm going to cheat and make it a tie between Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

33. What is your favorite movie from each of these genres:

Comedy:

Ghostbusters

Swashbuckler:

Pirates of the Caribbean

Film noir:

Rebecca
But also LA Confidential

Musical:

Footlight Parade

Holiday:

Joyeux Noel

Hitchcock:

To Catch a Thief
